India goes ahead, implements CAA, notifies rules, persecuted minorities to benefit

Indian government formally announces implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Indian govt announces implementation of key CAA Citizenship Amendment Act law that fast tracks citizenship for persecuted minorities – Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhist, Parsis, Christians from three of India’s neighbours- Pakistan, Afghanistan & Bangladesh.

The government had gotten the CAA passed way back in December of 2019 which was followed by vehement protests across the nation.

Since then, the government is promising the rules which took this long. The CAA has now been notified just before the national election announcement. It also needs to be mentioned that CAA for the first time makes religion a test of citizenship in the country.

India’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has notified today, the Rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA-2019). These rules, called the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 will enable the persons eligible under CAA-2019 to apply for grant of Indian citizenship. The applications will be submitted in a completely online mode for which a web portal has been provided.
