In a big development, the government of India has decided to celebrate 17th September every year as “Hyderabad Liberation Day”.
The move is an attempt to institutionalise remembrance of martyrs who liberated Hyderabad and to infuse the flame of patriotism in the youth. India’s Ministry of Home Affairs issued a Gazette notification to this effect.
The Ministry notification noted that Hyderabad remained under the rule of Nizams for 13 months after India gained independence in August 15 of 1947.
It took a police action named ‘Operation Polo’ to free the region from Nizam’s rule which happened on Sept 17 of 1948.
