BIG NEWS, India okays 15 USD Bn worth investments for semiconductor fab plants

In a major decision, the Indian government has approved $15.2 billion worth of investments in semiconductor fabrication plants, including a Tata Group proposal to build the country’s first major chipmaking facility.

India’s first semiconductor fabrication facility to come up in Dholera, says Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.The unit aims to bolster India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependency on imported chips.

This is a huge milestone in India’s tech ambitions when the government okayed billions worth of investments in semiconductor fabrication plants – including its first major chipmaking plant to be built by Tata.

According to one estimate, the facility will be able to pump out around 50 thousand wafers per month. Tata’s separate plan for a $3bn-plus chip assembly plant has also received clearance – amounting to a clear signal of India’s determination to keep pace with global advancements in semiconductor technology for critical EVs and AI.
