India’s Ministry of External Affairs has summoned this morning, the US Acting Chief of Mission, Gloria Berbena today. The meeting lasted for approximately 40 minutes.
This summoning is to register India’s strong objection to the remarks of the spokesperson of the US State Department about ‘certain legal proceedings in India’.
In a rather strongly worded statement issued, the India’s MEA has said, In diplomacy, the states are expected to be respectful of sovereignty and internal affairs of others. This responsibility is even more so in the case of fellow democracies.
It could otherwise end up setting unhealthy precedents.
India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. Casting aspersions on that is unwarranted”.
This comes days after India summoned German official based in New Delhi to register protest about the German Foreign Ministry comments on politics and legal proceedings in India.
Both US and Germany had commented on arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and insisting on a fair, transparent, and timely legal process for the jailed AAP leader.
